Carnegie disapproved of charitable giving that merely maintained the poor in their impoverished state, and urged a movement toward the creation of a new mode of giving which would create opportunities for the beneficiaries of the gift to better themselves.
As a result, the gift would not be merely consumed, but would be productive of even greater wealth throughout the society. Carnegie put his philosophy into practice through a program of gifts to endow public libraries in cities and towns throughout the United States, with the idea that he was thus providing people with the tools to better themselves. In order to ensure that his gifts would not be wasted, he stipulated that the municipality must pass an ordinance establishing a tax to support the library's ongoing operating costs after the initial grant provided the costs for building and equpping the library.
When several communities squandered their grants on extravagant buildings, Carnegie established a system of architectural guidelines that mandated simplicity and functionality.
After it became obvious that Carnegie could not give away his entire fortune within his lifetime, he established the Carnegie Foundation to continue his program of giving. Carnegie believed that this philanthropy should not come in the form of direct charity as the poor might squander the money. He believed that it should instead be used for programs and institutions that would benefit the common good.
Carnegie, a steel magnate, argued that very wealthy men like him had a responsibility to use their wealth for the greater good of society. He preached that ostentatious living and amassing private treasures were wrong. Carnegie justified the accumulation of wealth by explaining that the problem of our age isthe proper administration of wealth.
If there is proper administration of wealth then the rich and poor will bind together and have harmonious relationships. Andrew Carnegie was one of the most successful businessmen and most recognized philanthropists in history. With this being said, I feel as though the artist portrayed this in a clever way. Not only are the businessmen, soldiers and sailors literally supporting McKinley in the image, yet they are supporting him in a political sense as well.
In addition to this, I believe that the artist was symbolizing wealth and prosperity with the gold coin platform that McKinley proudly stands on. I feel as though the overall message of the piece is that with the support of common citizens, McKinley was able to leave behind a successful economy for his people.
He believe that the rich should distribute their wealth responsibly to benefit society. Capitalism ensured that the smartest and most talented people would rise to the top. This is proven with the multitudes wish for leveling, or the balancing of the riches, the rich appealing to the middle class, and the growth of the colonies.
Many of these people were poor whites, and wanted the wealth to be spread out equally, rather than just to the rich. Additionally, the rich appeal to the middle class to gain their support. Social Darwinists believed that the social order was the product of the natural selection of the individuals that were best suited for the existing living conditions. These individuals were white, Anglo-Saxon, wealthy men.
This theory, Social Darwinism, was applied to the monopolistic efforts of businessmen as John D. Rockefeller, Jr. The Gospel of Wealth based on Social Darwinism is the notion that the massive wealth held by prosperous businessmen was for the social benefit of everyone.
The advocates of the Gospel of Wealth such as Andrew Carnegie, Russell Conwell, and Horatio Alger linked wealth with a sense of heightened responsibility as those with more wealth had an equally great obligation to society. Each of the advocates of the Gospel of Wealth came from diverse backgrounds, but preached the same ideals.
